The Natural Growth Journey of a Pomeranian
The phase which people refer to as “Pom Uglies” represents a typical stage in Pomeranian development. Most Pomeranians enter this stage around 3 to 4 months old. Changes in appearance during this period become apparent, last only briefly, and begin to diminish between 6 and 8 months.
Your Pom’s soft puppy coat begins to lose its softness during this period, creating an untidy appearance. Puppies experience growth spurts, which result in changes to their height and weight that create an awkward appearance. The phase that surprises pet owners is a normal developmental process that will end.
How a Pomeranian’s Coat Changes With Age
Adult coat development process begins when your puppy reaches the age of 6 to 8 months. The development of facial features and muscle strength peaks during this period. The undercoat develops first, followed by the appearance of longer outer hairs, which begin to grow between 8 and 12 months.
The adult appearance of your Pomeranian becomes easier to predict when your dog reaches its first birthday. The majority of Pomeranians develop their complete fluffy coat after reaching 16 months, although some dogs experience their second coat change between 12 and 16 months.
How to Support Your Pom During This Stage
The Pom needs proper care to manage its shedding and maintain comfort during its growth period.
- Daily brushing helps prevent matting and control loose hair.
- Males of the species shed once per year, while females shed more frequently throughout their annual shedding cycle.
- The shedding process starts two to three months following each reproductive cycle.
Healthy animal coats shed heavily, but they will regrow thicker, fuller coats than before.
